Fall Colors Drives At Mile High

Summer has come to an end. And as one can imagine perhaps half of you are rejoicing at the change in weather, while the other half want the 90+ degree sunny days to continue without end. As for myself, I really enjoy our seasonal differences in our beautiful Centennial State; truly, there is something here for just about everyone.

Because booking a car with us is only part of the equation to really getting the most out of why you rented a ride at Drives At Mile High in the first place, it’s important that you are aware of how best to enjoy what you are getting yourself into here.
Let’s explore a couple key fall drives that you won’t want to miss this fall season:
Independence Pass (seasonal closure from nov.7- Memorial Day)
This is a longer drive that is recommended for an overnight stay. We recommend staying overnight in Vail or Aspen.
From our Drives At Mile High shop head westward up to Copper Mountain then turn south onto Colorado Road 91. Sneak behind Breckenridge and feel the magic of being surrounded by Americas tallest peaks. You can take your time, but keep in mind Independence Pass has a seasonal closure from November 7th and reopens again just before Memorial Day.
These locations are some of the most sought-after for travelers and locals alike. In this tour, you experience a great mix of nature, spirited driving, taking it easy, and comfortable accommodation in your mountain town of choice. Won’t you stay?

2. kenosha pass & beyond
Option 1 – Including Guanella Pass
Passing through the Colorado Trail and well-known by locals, Kenosha Pass is easily accessible from Denver by U.S. Highway 285. Stop at the summit to take in the views and stretch your legs. Continue west and pass through the small town of Bailey. Keep an eye out for the next town called Grant, where Guanella Pass begins. The road provides a link between Interstate 70 to the north and U.S. Highway 285 to the south. Alternatively, enter from the north at I-70 and enjoy the touring from there.
The road is paved, however it is not maintained in the winter months and is likely to close after a big snow. Take advantage of this fall season and enjoy the beautiful colors and scenery.

Option 2 – Including the towns of Fairplay, Breckenridge, & Frisco
Wish to go further and visit some great mountain destinations? Continue along 285 into Fairplay. From there, get on CO-9 toward Alma and Breckenridge. Here you will see Colorado’s epic Ten Mile Range of mountains, with Quandary Peak being the tallest at 14,271 ft. Look for old 19th century mining structures and trails way up above tree line where miners and burrows once labored for precious metals and minerals.
Passing through Summit County, you can stop in any of these towns and enjoy some delicious food, local beer (if that’s a thing for you), a bit of shopping, and exploring. Once you’ve had your fill, hit the road again and we’ll see you before long.
